As a teacher, we are "required" to know what to do at every moment. How stressful is that? Have you ever wondered how in the world can you teach a content in a fun and different way? I think of this all the time. Unfortunately, sometimes students think that learning is just not fun or exciting. The truth is how can we make our teaching style fun and productive while allowing students learning to improve? We have to understand that every student is not the same. What happens when teachers combine these learning preferences and allow
student learning to become more independent in their learning?
At this time, we are studying the Layers of the Earth in Science. Every year I see models of the Earth's Layers but cannot really see their expressions while creating their projects. Upon listening to Douglas Thomas in a New Culture of Learning at TEDxUFM, I thought how I can make it more interesting. Students have a passion on learning new context and we have to engage their passion. Anthony D’Angelo says, “Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.” Students want to play more than they want to learn. What if playing becomes learning? In other words, "play" is actually putting information with rules. How can we make learning play time? Teachers are tired of setting rules to explain the content. We try to figure how can students learn the world the way we learned it, and yet students can do the same by reshaping the context in the new technological era. It is true that unfortunately most teachers and administrators work in a world they believe they are the content or the context. It is time for teachers to think outside of the box and make learning fun again, at least they should try. We know that teachers have a hard time letting go of all their expertise and sometimes they get mad when a student or another colleague offers a suggestion. I know, I happened to me when I started to teach. But in the end, students can show how they learned by making the lesson exciting.
We need to ask ourselves, why aren’t we making learning more fun? Teachers job is to create imagination, honor passion, and connect people passion to what they want to learn. Let’s make learning fun and easy and imagine a world of creativity.
